Yes, I run like a girl in a skirt

…and by that I mean I run AWESOMELY (is that even a word? it is now)

This morning I ran with my Team Luna Chix and it was FREEZING..like hello we skipped fall and right to winter weather. It was a good thing I had my ladies to keep me company on my 5 mile pacer – otherwise I probably would have wimped out because I forgot my gloves and my fingers were becoming icicles. We fixed that problem by going to have our usual coffee date afterwards – I asked for an extra extra, “like as hot as you’re legally allowed to make it” (<–my exact words to the barista), soy chai latte.

I got these at our run today as a Team Luna Chix goodie, they are delicious
– I’m trying not to eat them off my lips.

After getting home and warming up, I went on a mission. I was a girl on a mission to find the perfect running skirt. Here’s what I ended up with:

pearl izumi skirt

Pearl Izumi Infinity Run Skirt from the Elite Series

pearl izumi 2

perfect length shorts underneath

pearl izumi 3

reflective lime green accents.

and yes that is a stuffed giraffe wearing a tiara.

I tired on about a million (okay probably more like 7) different brands and styles – which was really beneficial and time consuming┬ábecause I figured out what I did and did not like in a skirt.

Things I now know to look for in a skirt

  • a least one side slit, so I don’t feel like my stride is constrained, OR options to ruched up the side a little
  • boy shorts underneath, at least 3 inch inseam
  • those boy shorts need to have a grippy thing around your leg – I hate when shorts ride up
  • well thought out pockets – big enough for my beloved Gu or car key (I don’t run with my phone now so that wasn’t an issue to look for), in a easy to reach location while on the go, and the zipper works well – no snagging please
  • fabric type – a lot of brands I tried that a really heavy spandex/cotton type fabric that weighed a ton – I like to keep it light and flowy
  • adjustable waist band – I don’t know about you but I like my running skirts to stay up and on, no mid-run wardrobe malfunctions
  • look for sales, nice running gear can get pricey, but you can usually find great stuff on sale if you’re willing to spend a little more time looking and its totally worth it not to cheap out on your running gear – good quality products will take you through multiple race seasons

And MOST importantly – it has to come in cute colors.

I also really like the Moving Comfort Sprint Tech Skort – BUT they didn’t have it in the store in the color I wanted and size I needed, so I rushed home and ordered it. BONUS – the color I wanted was on sale and I got free expatiated shipping!

Moving Comfort Sprint Tech Skort in Twilight – on sale now for $33!!!

11 miles on the schedule tomorrow, I think I’ll try out my new skirt. I’ll let you know how amazing it was.

rain boot worthy long runs & pumpkin pie

here’s my weekend in short bursts of words and pictures of everything I ate.

Saturday:┬ámorning run with my Luna Chix. 4m at pace. It was very humid. I got gross. We all went for coffee after, sat outside in our grossness, and had an in-depth analysis of each other’s accents (very few of us are “Colorado natives”). kidding, we just spent an hour laughing at each other. we probably looked insane. love my ladies.

My first attempt at GF and dairy free pumpkin pie…I figured if I start experimenting now, I’ll have it perfected by Thanksgiving.

GF Dairy Free Pumpkin Pie

Jonah and I spent the evening discussing foreign politics and the meaning of life – in other words we watched “The Emperor’s New Groove” and ate half the pie.

Sunday: long run Sunday FUNday, RUNday! 9 miles on the menu. I dragged Jonah out of bed bright (well it was actually dark still) and early to run with me. Why would I torture him on a Sunday morning this way? Because he’s my favorite running buddy – he keeps me on pace, motivates me and we always have an enjoyable conversation while running…all in all he’s just a pleasant person to run with. He makes me enjoy running more.

I have to admit, I felt a little guilty dragging him along on this run because it dumped rain on us, but I really like running with my boy and the promise of stopping for brunch at Toast after was enough to convince him to come. I would have taken pictures because it was a new trail for us, but the rain made that a hazard for my phone’s life. Seriously, we probably should have been running in our rain boats.

Changing into dry clothes and eating this made it all better though:

This is what we came home to Sunday after brunch…have a little hail.

hail on our porchMonday: stretch and strength on the menu. I waited until after work to do it, which was a bad plan because I’m always kinda hungry and tired after work. Instead of eating the other half of the pie before my warm up run, I tried some of these (they were in a swag bag for a race a while ago):

sport beansThey did the trick. I’m trying out some new mid-run fuels as well…Sunday I had a GU espresso love gel. The flavor was pretty good and it definitely helped me pick it up for the end of my run, but the gel textures kinda gross me out.

Have you make a GF and dairy free pie before? recipe/ tips?

What’s your go-to fuel for running? Candy corn and jelly beans? Gels? Waffles? Please share! I’d love some input and ideas to try :)

Soap Box – Running Groups

I’m going to hop on my soap box for a minute and preach to you. I promise it won’t last long.

One of the best running (and personal!) decisions I made after moving to Colorado was joining a running group.

Why join a running group?

  • keep you accountable for your running – hey, you don’t want to suck wind in a group so you make sure to keep up with your running between group runs
  • learn about new places to run
  • advice on shoes, gear, the best races in town
  • support – we all have tough runs and bad days, having a running support group is mentally beneficial
  • its FUN! running with a group is 100x better than running alone

Your next question might be, “okay, I’m believer now, running groups are AMAZING – now where do I find one?”

I found my running group, Team Luna Chix Denver Run, through Meetup. Meetup had HUNDREDS of Denver running groups to choose from but I chose Team Luna Chix because I really wanted an all -women’s running that was a little more organized than ones with group titles like “meet me at Joe’s on wed”. Luna is an established brand that supports women, healthy lifestyles, fitness and has a delicious product to boot! So I figured a Luna sponsored running group would be a perfect fit for me.

PLUS we do awesome things together like the Kiss Me Dirty Mud Run

Kiss Me Dirty Mud Run

My running group – we’re awesome, we know.

Not sure Meetup is the way to go for you? Try asking your local running store if they have a running group – the runner store up the road from where I live also has a weekly evening run! Other places to look are rec/community centers, colleges and fitness centers.

What are you waiting for! Get out there and find some run buddies!! Already found your dream running group? – tell me about!!
